Distorted Reality - London debut of street artist Alaniz

DISTORTED REALITY will be an intimate exploration of culture and humanity. It is the personal research of a traveller. Discovering the human nature, society and the world - it will question our concept of reality and try to explore what influences it.

From the moment we are born, we are constantly learning and remembering things we see and hear. We are sent to school, where the educational systems are based on archaic archetypes set up by ancient and outdated intuitions. This information we receive is what defines our concept of reality. Education is the first, it is there to lay down the foundations and then as grow older religion, politics and the media come into play – altering the population’s vision of life.

The term 'reality distortion field' (RDF) was used by Bud Tribble in 1981 to describe Steve Job's charisma and the effects it had on his employees. A mixture of charm, charisma, bravado, marketing and persistence, he had the ability to convince others and even himself to believe almost anything. This ingenious recipe is used by many people of power with politians being the prime example.

It is through our own life experiences that we can begin to understand the real world we live in, and try to dissociate between what is told to be true, and what in reality is the truth. Unfortunately, more often than not, instead of finding the answers for ourselves we choose to buy them from our closest reality dealer without even questioning the source of this packaged view of the world.

Many of these concepts of existence, manipulated by systems of power, are no more than old paradigms of what life is thought to be. But over time as the truth manifests and the collective conscious becomes aware, we begin to observe the actual situation of our planet, and can try to comprehend the perishable nature of these ancient conceptions.

In this exhibition Alaniz paints his distorted vision of our reality, based on his experience collected during his journey through different lands and cultures. He uses mostly his own photographs as reference for his paintings, extracting certain parts of information from the original and producing a rearranged version of them. His intention is not the aim of manipulation but to reflect on the personal state of humanity as one single entity.

Exhibition opens 14th September 2016.

Oculus by Pyramid Oracle at BSMT Space in Dalston, London

'OCULUS' by @pyramidoracle showcases a collection of intricate and symbolic works that examine the dimensions of human spirit, and the complex world that it inhabits.

In a world where everything is recycled... nothing is new under the sun. With all things constantly being repurposed there is no originality. Only that which is authentic. By exploring the metaphysical, it seeks to capture the often imperceptible geometric systems that permeate through all of nature. And revisit venerable means of understanding the great mysterious architecture of the universe.

Exhibition runs from the 18 August - 24 August.
BSMT Space, 5D Stoke Newington Road, N168BH

Nick JS Thompson - Relics Exhibition At BSMT Space

In Nick JS Thompson’s first visit to his grandparents house since his grandfather passed away and his grandmother moved into care, he became aware of the character of the space where once personality had been the focus.

Documented in black and white the images are stripped of their warmth as if something is missing. Without the characters that previously inhabited it, the space itself becomes a gallery for relics that are left behind, and we are given an insight into these characters.

These stark images in a once loving environment show the inability of the artist to reconcile his emotional response to memory and loss.

The scene presented is relatable to anyone who has lost family members, and as such the artist's personal journey becomes a universal experience.

Thompson’s works are known for being strikingly austere, and with this work being his most personal to date the impartiality in which he sees the objects before him is left open to debate.

BSMT Space, 5D Stoke Newington Road, London, N168BH , United Kingdom
Exhibtion dates: 4 August - 7 August
Exhibition Private View 4th August at 18:00 - 22:00

Darker Shades of White - Normski Talk and Zine Launch

YOUTH CLUB in conjunction with Doomed Gallery celebrates this zine launch with ‘Darker Shades of White’, a one-off talk by renowned urban & hip-hop photographer Normski. Discussing the progression of his extensive archive from shooting London family life to documenting the emergence of hip-hop itself, ‘Darker Shades of White’ harks back to the very foundations of urban street culture in the UK during the 1980s. Working with YOUTH CLUB, Normski will produce a limited edition 40 page zine available for sale on the night.

‘Darker Shades of White’ is a previously unseen insight into the early days of Normski’s journey before his career as a TV and Radio presenter, notably as the presenter for BBC’s Dance Energy. Having photographed a distinct range of worldwide musicians such as Run DMC, Barry White and Dr Dre, he adopted the nickname ‘Normski’ whilst on a trip to New York. Through his involvement in music he gained his reputation as a leading authority on urban and contemporary culture, leading him to photograph hip-hop artists and fashion movements for publications like The Face, i-D and Vogue.

Youth Club are proud to launch this exclusive and intimate edit of Normski’s iconic photographs complimented by the very experiences that forged them.

‘Situ’ Exhibiton by guyandherbert At Book Club London

‘Situ’ is the first solo exhibition from creative duo guyandherbert.

guyandherbert use the camera as a tool to capture thought-provoking imagery. Presenting expressions based upon their reactions and thoughts influenced by the world around them, they create the surreal in the everyday.

They create dreamlike, raw and playful images, using the environment around them to portray their vision.Traditional and basic techniques are used to capture unusual situations in front of the lens. Location, lighting, props, and actors are some of the key ingredients that go into creating their images. Capturing the moment when it happens, rather than relying upon the comfort of post production - techniques inspired by designers and photographers such as Storm Thorgerson and Gregory Crewdson.

The ongoing 'Situational Masks' series encourages the viewer to immerse themselves in a mix of obvious every day situations and interrelated environments mixed with a colourful palette of ingredients. It asks the viewer to personally conjure up their own unique story and outcome for the subject matter as bold colour and mystery lure in and intrigue us.

As well as the ‘Situational masks’, there's a selection of their striking album artwork pieces on display. Both Guy and Herbert have been involved in a variety of projects and different roles within a broad spectrum of the creative industry. This has heavily influenced their style and approach to their art. Defying design trends, modern technology, and unmotivated by profit, they have developed a cloak and dagger style approach to design. Passion NOT fashion.

The exhibition has been directed and curated by Liat Chen
Exhibition Launch: Weds 17th August 6pm - midnight
Exhibition run until Sunday 16th October 2016
The Book Club, 100-106 Leonard Street, London, EC2A4H
