Oblivious - New Works by Nigel Cox at Gallery 8‏

Painter Nigel Cox minimalist style has earned him many fans, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who commissioned him to do the only portrait to date of the explorer, and legendary dancer Carlos Acosta.

Now the artist’s new show, Oblivious, opens on 12 November, with an open preview in association with the Terence Higgins Trust.

Cox’s background is one of adventure - he took part in the first circumnavigation of the globe along the Greenwich Meridian via land, sea and ice with Sir Ranulph. Oblivious references the subjects and our own frequent obliviousness to the world around us. Cox often paints his figures from a viewpoint where no face is visible and portrays them against a vague, vast, empty landscape. A deliberate move, designed to focus the full attention on the figure.

Cox paints primarily in oil on linen, building up thin layers of precise paint, developing depth and detail, and bringing an important warmth to the work. The resulting paintings are smooth to the touch and glow with a subtle inner light and life.

A limited edition of two specially selected prints, “Flash” and “Spiderman”will be released on the night, with all proceeds of the price (£150) going to the Trust.

Open from Wednesday 12 November 2014 until Saturday 22nd November 2014, 1100 until 1900 everyday.

Open preview Wednesday 12 November 2014
Gallery 8, 8 Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BN.
