Atomica Gallery is excited to announce Everyone’s Got One: A Skull Showcase in collaboration with their friends The Circle. Loaded with a myriad of connotations, the skull has always been a source of inspiration for artists. From Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Skull With A Burning Cigarette’ to Damien Hirst’s notorious platinum and diamond-encrusted creation, they can be found in countless masterpieces. For Everyone’s Got One Atomica has curated work by a variety of artists who have also used the timeless icon as their subject…

Each interpreting the skull in their own distinct way, the work on show will include Ramon Maiden’s re-appropriated vintage illustrations, detailed digital paintings from Tom Bagshaw, Nick Sheehy’s dreamlike characters, an exclusive limited edition print from Juxtapoz magazine cover artist Charlie Immer, plus much more.

And an exhibition at The Circle wouldn’t be complete without tattoos! To celebrate the occasion a selection of artists, including previous Atomica exhibiting artistsRicardo Cavolo, Jack Pearce and Mister Paterson, have created exclusive skull tattoo flash designs. Available as tattoos at The Circle for the duration of the showcase, the flash sheet artwork will also be up for grabs as a special limited edition print.

Test Space Presents: Nick JS Thompson

Test Space are very pleased to be hosting the first solo show by Nick JS Thompson at their space at C/159 in Camden.

Nick is a London based documentary photographer who has worked extensively in South East Asia since 2008. His passion in documenting his surroundings started when he was involved in the local London BMX subculture.

It is the interest in capturing community that has remained the key interest for Nick and through his journeys in South East Asia he has come across distinctive communities that have had a profound impact on him.

For this exhibition Nick will be showing work from his Phoumi series. Phoumi (meaning village in Khmer) is an extended project documenting the communities that live in floating villages on the Tonle Sap lake in Cambodia. Inhabited by a mixture of Vietnamese and Khmer fishing communities, they travel up and down the lake depending on the seasons and rainfall. The villages face a serious ongoing problem of access to clean and safe drinking water. The overpowering feelings created by the colour grey are used heavily in this collection to emphasise the economic disparity and hardships that people face. Whilst allowing injections of the vivid colours usually associated with Cambodia to highlight the strong sense of family and community that living in this situation creates.

Opening night 27th February 6pm Onwards
Exhibition is open daily until the 5th March.

Red Stripe Rock the Casbah at Brixton Market

Red Stripe set Jo the challenge of re-making the hit for a video to mark the introduction of the authentic Jamaican stubby bottle to the UK.

The video forms the latest instalment in Red Stripe’s series of Make projects and celebrates the lager beer going back to its Jamaican roots with the launch of the stubby bottle. Over 95 different sounds were created by Jo and fellow street musicians over the course of just one day. Bass notes, melodies, riffs and atmospheric effects were gathered from Brixton’s unique collection of bars, stalls, shops and side streets. They included a fishmonger’s rattling ice, a guitar chord sequence courtesy of a busker, bananas and mangoes, a junk shop’s eclectic wares, mannequins and huge saucepans.

The reactions of the public were also captured, including a surprise cameo from none other than The Clash’s very own Mick Jones; a former Brixton student who has a longstanding affiliation with the area.

Red Stripe’s laid back, DIY Jamaican heritage is reflected in the choice of the video’s track, location and front man. Jo Bucket, who has gained recognition thanks to his effortless percussion skills, has always been skilled at creating unique and captivating performances out of inanimate objects; from entertaining school classmates by drumming on his desk with pencils, to performing to enraptured London crowds on buckets and bins.

Jo said: “Collaborating with Red Stripe on this project has been a lot of fun, full of new challenges and opportunities for creating sound. It’s been a real platform to create something unique that totally fits in with the DIY way I like to do things – working with whatever’s to hand and making something special out of it to get people smiling, as I have done for years on the streets of London – but on a much bigger scale!”

Patrick Morgan MATERIAL GIRL London Exhibition

Début Art and The Coningsby Gallery are delighted to announce a solo exhibition of works by one of the world's top fashion illustrators Patrick Morgan.

Patrick started his career as a freelance designer after gaining a Degree in Graphics and Illustration with Commendations for Print Making at Kingston University (London) in 1998. He is currently studying at The Royal College of Art.

Having worked extensively for many years with illustrious fashion houses including Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Chanel and Prada. Patrick's work is synonymous with glamour and luxury.

The title of the exhibition alludes to what it is to be a material girl. The predilection of acquiring a rich and affluent life, rather than aspiring to romance and relationships. It explores the notion of 'buying into luxury as a lifestyle'.

Patrick was once quoted as saying: “Think for yourself, be inspired by those at the top and don’t be afraid to compete with the best. Don’t be beaten by the first hurdle of life and WORK HARD.”

Walls with Wounds by Dale vN Marshall

Artists’ workspaces have inspired their inhabitants for centuries, but for rising star of the fine art world Dale vN Marshall, whose landmark solo exhibition Walls With Wounds opens at Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery & Museum on 15 February 2014, the crumbling walls of his former Victorian workhouse studio have not only inspired but become intrinsic parts of his multi-media works.

Marshall, a graduate of Coventry University Fine Art degree who also studied Graduate Abstract Painting at CSULB, one of California's finest art schools, has enjoyed success in the UK and America, and is bringing his work back to Coventry for a landmark UK solo exhibition.

Originally a graffiti artist spray-painting the walls of Bristol under the tag ‘Vermin’, Marshall was sectioned in 1999 in one of Britain’s oldest asylums, St Lawrence’s Hospital in Cornwall.

Walls with Wounds draws inspiration not only from graffiti and Marshall’s time at St Lawrence’s, but also from his studio, a former Victorian workhouse in North Wales, its decaying walls inscribed by children over 100 years ago.

The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England, DASH – Disability Arts In Shropshire through the IN Project. There are a series of artist- lead events linked to this exhibition including an In Conversation on 20th March and two Workshops on 5th April and 10th May featuring Dale vN Marshall and his wife Georgette. Tickets for all of these events are available at www.theherbert.org

One Red Rose Forever – Copyright

Known across the streets of the UK for his trademark roses, Copyright is the clear choice for a Valentine’s show at Lawrence Alkin Gallery this February. Using his works to explore ideals of modern culture through classic icons of beauty– butterflies, flowers and gorgeous women – One Red Rose Forever explores the impossibilities of idealism and the unattainable visions of beauty found in fashion, music and popular culture.

Fusing street art, graffiti and more traditional styles, Copyright uses a mixture of classic painting techniques and spray can art, citing influences from the Pre-Raphaelites to Alfred Hitchcock. His works are highly popular, collected by the likes of The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett and exhibited in sell-out shows from London to Tokyo. One Red Rose Forever sees Copyright work across a variety of media, including wood, paper and canvas, and the opening night will see the first 50 attendees being given one of his much sought after prints, a Valentines gift of epic proportions…

Brett Amory: Twenty-Four in London

Lazarides  is pleased to present Twenty-Four in London, a continuation of the critically acclaimed ‘Waiting’ series by American contemporary artist Brett Amory. Following his 2012 and 2013 exhibitions, Twenty-Four in San Francisco and Twenty-Four in New York, respectively, Amory’s first solo exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone will present twenty-four paintings of London's most iconic locations, including The National Museum, Abbey Road and The Blind Beggar alongside multimedia installations in their flagship gallery on Rathbone Place.

Amory’s creative process to this particular series involved over a month of research and observation, taking in the length and breadth of the nation’s capital by bicycle and documenting over forty locations with more than fifty hours of video and hundreds of photos at each place. From Kensington and Wimbledon to Hackney and Brixton, each painting portrays a localised arena featuring a diverse demographic of the city dwellers including night clubbers, commuters, school children and traders all going about their daily routine. Each unique setting is quietly and calmly depicted through the artist’s distinctive painterly brushstrokes and scenic anticipation.

Harnessing the power of social media to obtain recommendations on potential locations, the artist selected sites not only for their historical relevance to this global mecca but moreover for the impact each site has on locals and ability to visually communicate a narrative about the vicinity and its inhabitants:

These shows are for the locals. I want to give the viewer an experience. By having painting, photography, video, installation and found object I hope the viewer walks away with something, the same way a great movie or book affects you. You take it home with you and chew on it for a few days or even weeks.

This body of work—simultaneously soothing and troubling to the viewer—offers visitors an intimate and thought-provoking snapshot of London through the eyes of one of California’s brightest young talents.
