Protein is proud to present a stunning in-depth photographic study of cult artist and musician Daniel Johnston by NY portrait photographer Jung Kim. DANIEL JOHNSTON: here, is the culmination of five years of intimate collaboration and friendship between the pair, showcasing a selection from thousands of photographs captured on film since the project commenced in 2008.
Protein first came across Jung's work last year when they hosted a hugely successful exhibition of Daniel’s drawings at their gallery - Jung was never far from his side, capturing intimate moments of his personal and prolific professional life, both at home and on the road. Protein will be hosting the London book launch and exhibition at 18 Hewett Street on Thursday 30th May 2013.
The production of DANIEL JOHNSTON: here was funded entirely by Daniel’s fans on Kickstarter, making it one of the most successful crowdfunding photography projects to date. Having spent the last 20 years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps and existential torment, Daniel has gained an ever-growing international cult audience. His influence is often cited by both artists and musicians, and his songs have been covered by the likes of Tom Waits, Beck, The Flaming Lips and Spiritualized, to name a few.
All prints, alongside the beautiful photo book, will be on sale throughout the show. Join them for the opening night on Thursday 30th May by submitting your name to billetto.co.uk/danieljohnstonhere, where drinks will be kindly provided by Sailor Jerry. For those that can't make it, the exhibition will be on till 9th June.
