José Parlá's Broken Language London Exhibition at Haunch of Venison

Haunch of Venison presents its first solo exhibition of New York based artist José Parlá. Born in Miami of Cuban parents artist José Parlá’s vibrant works explore the multi-layered histories of cities and urban environments; his paintings and site-specific installations are created both in his large carriage house studio and also works outside throughout city surfaces.

His expressive painting style and layers of ephemera and found objects combined with calligraphic abstraction have a lyrical feel to them, are uniquely his. This exhibition presents new paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculptures throughout our three gallery spaces.

José Parlá summarizes the work in the exhibition Broken Language:

"For most of my life I have experienced being in transition and migration. This feeling allows me to bring the broken languages of the global community and its conditions into the gallery. My work is an empire of fragmented cacophonies, observed performances, palimpsestic musical gestures, and topographical compositions governing the essence of the cities I’ve travelled through."

José Parlá has exhibited internationally, including major shows in London, New York, Paris and Havana. In 2012 he exhibited at the 11th Havana Biennial, Cuba, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and was added to the collection of the British Museum.

Spraying Bricks - Episode 6 - ID-IOM

Spraying Bricks ventured south of the river to an abandoned, soon to be demolished, 5 storey Edwardian building. Standing outside the townhouse there was a feeling of desertion, but as you walk through the door of the Brixton property it is clear to see that ID-IOM have made their mark. With their studio situated in the basement, and their canvas being the entire building, the two brothers have established a creative hub that has no limits or restrictions. With very little space left to paint, Spraying Bricks were fortunate enough to capture a glimpse of the process these guys go through on a daily basis within the house of paint.

ID-IOM are a collective based in Brixton. Originally from the Isle Of Man, brothers Hugo and Sholto adopted their name from their late, father's art supplies shop. However, their father was not the only person to influence them in their lives. Their mother was a seamstress, and their older brother was the person responsible for exposing them to graffiti culture. With a creative gene running in the family, it is unsurprising that Hugo and Sholto have taken the path they have. Since moving to London, Hugo's and Sholto's work has developed and progressed ten-fold, with unique techniques and styles which ensures that their work is recognisable and stands out from the crowd.

Walk by, Ignore me, Forget you ever saw me a solo show by My Dog Sighs

After 10 years of giving his art away for free as part of the now infamous Free Art Friday project, My Dog Sighs has this year finally found himself strapped in to a well-deserved meteoric rise. With an incredible international following in Israel, Japan and of course the UK, three sold-out shows under his belt, and astronomical numbers on Facebook and Youtube; My Dog Sighs is fast becoming an important figure on the contemporary art scene.

My Dog Sighs' style is characterised by the combination of melancholic and often naive portraiture with the use of found materials including abandoned food cans; an unusual choice when considering traditional street art ideas of painting or pasted walls. Initially stemming from the desire to interact with the true public without causing permanent damage to public and private property. This transient work is not concerned with permanence or mass audience, but a beautiful desire to communicate quietly with a single participant. Why cans? By recycling already ‘lost’ and abandoned materials, the cans add a layer of humanity and fragility echoing the solitary moment the'finder' discovers this lost soul.

Private View will be 6-10pm on Thursday 21st March 2013
Please Note: Private View is strictly by invitation only.

RSVP is ESSENTIAL Please send names to guestlist@londonwestbank.com.
Show open to public thereafter until Sunday 31st March.
(Gallery open daily 11am-7pm).

Franck Allais In Passing Exhibition

KK Outlet is proud to announce the first solo show of French photographer Franck Allais. In Passing will present two of Allais’ projects that encapsulate his skill of taking a simple concept and executing it with his trademark flair and wit.

Opening the show, Allais presents Subverting The City – a collection of images featuring city boys dressed in drab conservative clothes from the waist up but who are a little more flamboyant in skirts and heels from the waist down. The composition of these images are so seamless and their motion so natural that you have to look twice and call your judgment into question.

In Passing, also features The Weight of Words. Originally Allais wanted to create a series about the movement, sound and chaos of traffic. After setting up his camera on a tripod and taking photos of passing traffic, Allais noticed that he was ignoring what should have been obvious: what was written on the vehicles. “Instead of seeing vans and trucks, I saw words floating by like a visual dialogue, messages bombarding my brain that were instantly forgotten. I realized I had hit on something both playful and disturbing.”

Private View: Thursday 7th February 7 – 9pm
Exhibition Runs: 8 – 26 February

Spraying Bricks - Episode 5 - INKFETISH

October 2012 saw the launch of Tom Blackford's, aka Inkfetish's, first solo show. Spraying Bricks was fortunate enough to catch up with him a couple of weeks prior to the execution of this piece to mark the launch of his solo show, named Imaginary Friends. Held at the Blackall Studios, East London, Imaginary Friends explores childhood mythologies and fears of adapting to a surreal adult world and also marks Tom's progression into the fine-art world.

Tom was born and raised in London, and has been creating street art for over a decade, building a successful career as both a muralist and illustrator. His love for Japanese animation and pop culture has seen him produce work for Pixar & Blue Sky Studios and publications such as Vanity Fair, Bizarre and Graphotism. His fascination with Japanese animation that drove him to grace the streets of Tokyo and create large murals for Manga Entertainment ad his own brand of visual iconography.

“What Are You Doing After This” - Group Exhibition London

Ivory & Black Soho in association with Vans Syndicate proudly present – “What are you doing after this?” – A group exhibition featuring some of the most exciting young artists currently living and working in New York and Los Angeles, working across a wide range of disciplines including photography, video, sculpture, painting and mixed media.

At first glance it would be easy to dismiss this show as just another skate art show. To many that would be the obvious connection between the 17 artists in the show, but the real theme for WAYDAT is friendship. It is the friendship between the group that connects them. Although they have been friends for many years this is the first time they have all exhibited together. Some of the artists names may be familiar, others you won’t have heard of but all are of equal importance in terms of the friendships they all share and the world that they have created.

Artists in the exhibition: Curtis Buchanan, Jason Dill, Leo Fitzpatrick, Fuck This Life, Jerry Hsu, Atiba Jefferson, Todd Jordan, Kevin “Spanky” Long, Nina Long, Neckface, Alex Olson, Jeff Potocar, Tino Razo, Lele Saveri, Chris Shonting, Meryl Smith and William Strobeck.

Conor Harrington's London Exhibition

A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win is the name of the next exhibition at The Outsiders in London and is set to feature Conor Harrington's sought-after study paintings.

Conor has given his studies the name Morning Glories as he paints them daily, first thing upon arrival at his east London studio. These particular studies were painted during Conor's work on the painting A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win itself, originally exhibited at Lazarides Rathbone's Bedlam exhibition in October 2012. The painting and its accompanying works from the same series, Whose World is This? and For Want of a Kingdom, the Battle was Lost, concern the transition of power from the West to new superpowers in the East, specifically China.

The show is planned to include over 20 studies on canvas board and framed, plus larger studies on paper. The exhibition runs from 1st February — 9th March 2013.

Stay Up! Los Angeles Street Art Book

Stay Up!: Los Angeles Street Art is an investigation of the global phenomenon of street art published by Cameron + Company. Told from the perspective of artists working in Los Angeles, it offers a new vantage point for understanding an art form that is widely popular yet has been the subject of speculation and much uncertainty.

Questions whether street art is the next major art movement or if it a simply a trend and the differences between graffiti and street art are explored. A number of counterintuitive themes plague street art but that does not stop the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding this engaging and exciting art form.

Street art has exploded as a creative outlet and progressed from a counter culture movement based in graffiti in previous decades to a legitimate business platform in design, fashion, film, publishing, and art. The author explores the uniqueness of L.A. along with some of the successes and pitfalls these creative artists encounter. The major themes presented will familiarize the reader with the street art scene in L.A. and add new meaning to this creative capital.

This new publication is available now and you can buy it here via Amazon here: Stay Up! Los Angeles Street Art Book .

Frank Malt's 100 UK Graffit Artists Book

Simply opening these covers commits you to being dazzled by 100 of the UK's top "writers" and street artists, immersing yourself in the styles, past and present, which make UK street art great.

Upon its arrival in the UK from New York in the 1980s, graffiti rapidly spread across the island, infecting the youth like a stylistic virus. Out of the early days came names that would become part of UK writing legend, such as Mode2, Zaki Dee 163, Choci Roc, Goldie, and Robbo. Alongside works by these pioneers, we sweep across the whole of the UK, taking in Scotland and Wales, running through the nineties and right up to the modern day when more advanced, technical graffiti, wheat pasting, and stenciling are the new media on the street.

This collection includes works by Aroe, Skore, Xens and Kem, Mef, and more. Guiding us through this review is Steam 156, who was there at the start and is still as passionate as ever. This is a must-have collection for graffiti writers and fans around the world.

McGee began as a graffiti artist on the streets of San Francisco, working under such tags as Ray Fong, Twist & Twisto, and his work since then has hugely expanded the terms of both street art & contemporary art.

This volume revisits McGees most influential installations in art spaces, and considers the evolution of his aesthetic within institutional settings. Previously unseen photographs by Craig Costello document the artists work on the streets of san Francisco in the early 90s, highlighting the contributions of his friends and mentors.

Also included are images from the artists famous slide lecture, compiled and refined over the past 20 years, and an oral history of the bay areas Mission school by McGees friends, mentors and collaborators. Featuring 450 images, including many never before published, the book is designed by the artist in collaboration with Conny Purtill.

Signal Gallery Present RAE ' Nocturnal Trips' Solo Exhibition

Signal Gallery are delighted to to be introducing the work of Brooklyn street artist RAE to London. RAE has made a name for himself in New York with a series of lively installations on the street combining sculpture made up of found objects and painting. His work has a intelligent and witty quality which comes across as 'very New York' to us Londoners. Placement is very important with some works finding their way onto apparently inaccessible spots (e.g. on the top of lamp posts).

'Nocturnal Trips' will be his first show in the UK. The title refers to the nighttime 'trips' he takes to plan and install his artwork on the street. The city is a very different place, especially when you are seeing it both as a blank canvas and the potential scene of your arrest. It also refers to the thought processes that can happen in the dead of night when you're unwillingly awake. This can be a feverish state where extravagant ideas are bubbling up in a way that couldn't happen in the sane light of midday. RAE has tried to capture some of the semi-dream state images in the works for his show.

Private view 24th January 6 - 9pm
Open 25th January - 16th February
Signal Gallery, 32 Paul Street, London EC2A 4LB
Opening Times: Tues-Sat 12-6 pm, and by appointment at other times.

Christian Palmer Solo Show at Graffik Gallery, London

Having had the most amazing successful year in 2012, exhibiting in Australia, Europe & Asia, Christian Palmer comes to London in January to present his very first UK solo show at Graffik Gallery

Christian Palmer embraces the urban contemporary genre from a kind of mongrel fine art perspective. His work is a culmination of many years in the creative arts ranging from graphics and illustration to painting and stencil art. Current work has been influenced by the street art movement, the death of his dog and working with kids. It is from the vantage point of an outsider he reflects on our preconceptions and poses questions about the human condition. Canvas, wood, street scapes and screenprints are all used to communicate lyrical art works, using a child's writing, the most elementary graffiti.
