Steve Powers & NYorkers Video

NYorkers catch up artist Steve Powers in this clip above.

"I’ve known Steve Powers for years and he never fails to impress or surprise. I told him that we wanted to do a New Yorkers feature on him and he told me to come to a new address in Brooklyn that I've never been to. When I arrived, I was surprised to see that he had set up shop in a 5000 square foot space in downtown Brooklyn. Even more intriguing, but in character for Steve, was that he had somehow convinced some community board to provide this space to him for free. Like the title of his book, Steve is a master of “The Art of Getting Over”.

Spraying Bricks - Episode 1 - SMUG

Smug. An Australian street artist based in Glasgow. Since recognising his passion for Graffiti, Smug has quickly become one of the most talented street artists around. His high-quality murals demonstrate a photo-realistic style, and a careful and precise attitude to his work. Smug is inspired by the people he knows and whomever comes into contact with, creating thoroughly unique pieces that have been exhibited globally.

The first episode of Spraying Bricks captures Smug painting the face of Louis Jensen, founder of Spraying Bricks. The piece was executed on the Village Underground, Great Eastern Street, in the heart of Shoreditch.

Spraying Bricks is a channel which explores beneath the surface of artistic creation. For every piece of art tells a story. Art is not just reliant on the superficial final piece, however the process, thought and meaning which creatives go through prior to the final art form.

'Snake Gun' by Horfee‏

Case Studyo has launched the first object of Parisian artist Horfee. Well known for his wall paintings, this doesn’t mean he falls under the label ‘street’ artist because he works within the urban environment. He is an artist beyond the walls, he draws where and whenever possible.

His inspiration comes from old cartoons and daily city life; citizes corruption and greed, found in our capitalistic system and contemporary art world. In this object Horfee shows 2 strong vices, a snake and a gun, who fight for power. The black dots refer to early graffiti patterns.

Snake/Gun is made in white porcelain with hand painted black details in an edition of 9. Each object comes in a customized wooden box hand painted by the artist, each box is unique and comes with a numbered and signed certificate + screenprint. Size: 20x17x15cm. (7.8x6.6x5.9inch) It is available from Case Studyo here

Previous artworks in the series have included Sole Inspector by James Jarvis, Totem by Kustaa Saksi, The City by Ben Drury and Beer, Waffles and Nuts (in collaboration with Nike) by Jiro Bevis.

The fifth in their series is by Geneviève Gauckler; a French artist, illustrator and art director who is probably best known for her ever-evolving procession of lovable characters. Gauckler's accomplished career has seen her working for French record label F Communications (with Laurent Garnier and St. Germain), on music promos for Dimitri from Paris, Pierre Henry and Sparks (with directors Kuntzel & Deygas), plus commercials for the likes of Yves Saint Laurent.

Entitled Elevation, Gauckler's artwork for Art & Sole features a figure wearing a jetpack and some 'powerful' sneakers. 'The figure is ready to press the button and fly,' explains Gauckler, 'with sneakers that are perfectly suited for such a thrilling adventure. It’s important to feel well grounded before leaving the ground!'

Each print is a limited edition of 50, and is emboss stamped, signed and numbered by the artist. To enhance the futuristic theme of the piece, the artwork has also been screenprinted on to a metallic silver paper using opaque white, black and purple inks.

ROA at Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne, Australia

Belgian street artist Roa recently visited Australia to exhibit a selection of new works at Backwoods Gallery, Melbourne. The exhibition, aptly titled Carrion, consists of a series of works in his characteristic style: oversized animal portraits, the creatures at once elevated and eerie, though this time focusing on the unique fauna found in Australia.

During his time in Melbourne, Roa struck up a collaboration with the staff and animals of Healseville Sanctuary, a nature reserve dedicated to native Australian species. The Sanctuary commissioned two works to be painted on their grounds north-east of Melbourne and provided consultation, information and inspiration for the artist in turn.

Here, emerging filmmaker Matt Harding follows Roa over a weekend as he encounters the strange and wonderful animals native to this country and reinterprets them on various sites within the Sanctuary.

'Deck The Walls' Exhibition At Stolen Space

This Winter, StolenSpace presents 'Deck The Walls', a Christmas Group Show celebrating the art of the Greetings Card. The show will be unveiled for the first time on Thursday 6th December, and will open with an exclusive evening of festive folly. Featuring brand-new originals from the likes of D*Face, David Bray, Will Barras, Word to Mother, and many, many more, this is a must-see showcase from some of the most exciting artists on the scene.

'Deck The Walls' is a celebration of the Greetings Card in all its splendour. From the time they arrived in London in 1843, Greetings Cards have been an overlooked artform, and have changed drastically in nature. The early Egyptians used papyrus scrolls; we use Moonpig and horrific family photos.

The show's original pieces will include reworked vintage designs, religious and holy depictions, and newly imagined traditional scenes. Using a range of different media, our artists share their unique Christmas vision with canvas, wood, paper, and collage.

StolenSpace Gallery invites you to join them in Greeting the Season with festive beverages and snacks provided by The Bread Street Kitchen. Warm your hands, sample some festive treats, and feast your eyes on a delicious collection of Christmas artworks.

English, geography, languages, maths and science are amongst the classes studied.

The show consists primarily of original paintings on a variety of framed objects; as well as a selection of limited edition prints and an accompanying publication. Lucas Price - T.E.A.M Atlas Exhibition

In T.E.A.M  Atlas, Lucas Price will exhibit a completely new body of work. The title Team Atlas is an acronym, (The Earth As My Atlas), which refers to the idea of mapping and cataloguing using images and text. The work comprises a series of large scale oil paintings and carbon and graphite drawings which depict every day objects rendered in hyper realist oils, and panels of monochrome texts which draw on a variety of sources, from sculptural forms to skewed sporting logos.

Shown together the works create new points of departure. Incorporating poetry, appropriation, trompe l'oeil, photography and sculpture, the show is a manifesto of sorts, which lays the ground work for a series of possible new directions. If the atlas is a big as the earth, the exploration starts where you stand.

Price is one of very few artists to be accepted onto the Royal College of Art's MFA painting course without any prior training or qualification. This exhibition will show a culmination of work created during his time spent at the college, building on an artistic path that has led from graffiti, painting the UK's largest illegal piece & being invited to appear in Banksy's Oscar nominated film “Exit through the Gift Shop”, via fashion and design.

Private View: Thursday 6th December 6 - 9pm
Exhibition open 7th - 21st December 2012 - 10am - 6pm Tuesday - Saturday

Dalston Corner Shop Transformed Into Giant Musical Instrument

East London shoppers had the surprise of their lives when their local corner store in Dalston’s Kingsland High Street became a giant musical instrument for one day only.

The shop, Best Supermarket, was radically transformed overnight from a typical neighbourhood store selling everyday goods to an all-singing, all-dancing musical masterpiece by Red Stripe lager beer for their Make Music in the Corner Shop project which brought a little slice of Jamaica to the UK for one day only.

Products on the shelves and items left scattered around the store became the most unlikely of instruments, triggered into performance when a customer chose a Red Stripe from the shelves. The reactions of surprised patrons were captured in a ground-breaking video, released today, as they set off the corner shop to the well known rock steady tune of “A Message to You Rudy” by Jamaican musician, Dandy Livingstone, later made famous by The Specials.

To see how they made the store come to life check out this additional behind the scenes video below:

The Enchanted Forest: Celebrating 200 years of Grimm’s Fairy Tales

The first ever collection of Grimm’s fairy tales, entitled “Children’s and Household Tales”, was published in December of 1812, and two hundred years later it is still thrilling children and adults alike. To celebrate two hundred years of enchantment and magic; seven young up and coming illustrators will be interpreting these wonderfully dark and mysterious stories into a very special Christmas exhibition at Foyles. With inspiration taken from both the classics, such as Hansel and Gretel, and the less well-known tales like The Golden Bird; this exhibition is about interpreting and re-discovering a cultural legacy that has been with us for 200 years.

The contributing artists include Emma Block, Lesley Barnes, Laura Barrett, Natsuki Otani, Yelena Bryksenkova, Emmeline Pidgen and Karolin Schnoor. Prepare to be spellbound as you enter The Enchanted Forest.

This free exhibition opens on Wednesday 28 November and runs until  Saturday 8 December.

Black Xmas Exhibition At Signal Gallery, London

Don’t expect jingling bells, carol singers or a Santa’s Grotto this year at Signal for Christmas. After a year of jubilees and twinkling medals, they really felt the need to redress the balance with something not festive at all. They have asked their resident Punk legend Gaye Black (aka Gaye Advert), who’s always in favour of a good dollop of the dark side, to curate this one with malice.

All the artists in the show have been given strict instructions not to have a good time and have been chosen for their penchant for the quirky anyway. Expect the worst! More details and a full line-up of the artist taking part can be found over on the event Facebook page here.

At the private view Thursday, 29 November 2012, the fabulous steam punk band ‘The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing’ will be performing a politely riotous set.

Peter Strain presents 'Admit One' Exhibition

The Coningsby Gallery and Début Art are proud to announce Peter Strain's first solo London exhibition 'Admit One' from the 7th — 19th January 2013.

The project looks to reinterpret classic and cult films posters. Much of the modern imagery associated with film marketing contains banal, spliced together pictures of the main actors with no soul or meaning behind it. I want to create artworks that reflect artistry, skill and the importance of Cinema.

Peter Strain is an AOI (Association of Illustrators) Critics’ Choice Award-winning illustrator based in Belfast.

He specialises in creating carefully composed, hand-rendered illustration and typography and always tries to experiment with texture and mark-making techniques to keep his work evolving.
His work is hugely influenced by film and music and aims to tackle social, political and cultural issues with a highly distinctive hand lettering style, bold imagery and humour.

HurtYouBad #1: Concealed Intentions Magazine Launches

Conceived a decade ago by 'has beens and never was's', Hurtyoubad.com was the first blog solely focused on graffiti and the disparate elements that surround this hard to pin down subculture.

Deliberately esoteric and argumentative from the outset, HYB's varied content was curated by a select group of contributors drawn from the darkest corners of graffiti's uniquely peculiar demographic. With scant regard for aesthetics or punctuation the site inexplicably developed into a fully fledged blog with a hefty following.

HurtYouBad#1 aims to be the crystallization of a half remembered and fully inebriated mission statement: 'a graffiti magazine without graffiti'.

"So, with the demise of the glossy graffiti magazines we grew up on and a desire to produce something that would appeal to the more cerebral reader, we set forth. Forget the Illuminati; the connections that graffiti affords its participants would have David Icke affording us lizard man status.

This insipid infiltration of the mainstream world by writers allows us a unique insight into contemporary culture. For its debut outing HurtYouBad#1 indulges in some pig plastic surgery, talks to a couple of artists and takes a few snapshots on its travels."

With contributions from TopSafe alumni Will Robson-Scott and world-renowned graffiti writers Roid and Horfe, the magazine also features artist Will Tuck, Smart Crew, Sean Vegezzi, Gary Warnett and Stephen K Shuster, amongst others.

HurtYouBad#1:Concealed Intentions is available now from TopsafeLondon and selected retailers worldwide. £8 + p/p 108 pages American newsletter size.

RUN - The Storyteller Screenprint

Our friend RUN has recently released a new screenprint titled The Storyteller. Here is what the artist had to say about the new edition.

"The story teller’ A story, or the beginning of a story, an illustration for a book that has never been written. Everyone wants a storyteller near by to send us floating into our world of dreams and suspended intrigue; at least we all wanted it when we were little. All that can be imagined will be, it’s a timeless theatre of tales to be told with whispers and roars. Find the child within you, wrapped in reckless abandon. Be brave and curious, have no fear of the black shadow, embrace the diversity and give voice to your fantasy…The story teller is coming." — RUN

The new edition has been printed by East London print house MULA Printing and is sized at 60 x 39 cm, 3 colours available in 4 different colours blue/red/yellow/green . Each is an edition of just 12, printed on Fabriano Rosaspina paper 300gsm signed and numbered. The new prints are £65 + shipping and available now via the artists website here.
